Our Story

After participating in Women 2.0's Startup Weekend in Nov 2010, Yuri Rabinovich and Monique Barbanson decided to continue working on a new recommendation engine for events. It was really hard to keep the momentum generated during the Startup Weekend because of the full time jobs. Yuri identified a huge gap in the entrepreneurship eco system between hackathons and incubators. The team decided to create a platform with structured methodology for themselves and others where people will be able to test the newborn team and the idea for a longer period of one month.

Yuri pitched the idea to Ziv Yoash from Perkins Coie who identified a great future potential and decided to join the team and provide legal support to Startup Monthly teams and sponsorship support from Perkins Coie.

In January 2011 Yuri left his full time job as lead of engineering in a cool startup Ensuant. Creating new organization from ZERO was really hard. We started using meetup.com as our mail tool to manage our community and it helped us grow the initial community.

Startup Monthly's first workshop was launched in February, 2011 with 5 sessions over 4 weeks workshop. The workshop produced 3 companies - Agora Technologies, Shinobi Labs, Jeanome. We were able to expand our Core team with Vadim Slavin, Mike Kulgevich and Tim McCoy who were passionate to disrupt the ecosystem and provide better results.

The new Startup Monthly team continued the Customer Development process by collecting feedback from the teams and team leaders in Idea Accelerator 1.0. From lessons learned the team identified that team formation should be improved and the Idea Accelerator should be longer. The team introduced evaluation methodology for the teams who apply to Idea Accelerator. The new Idea Accelerator 2.0 included 7 sessions (instead of 5 in V1.0) over 5.5 weeks workshop (instead of 4 in V1.0). The demo day was improved by introducing expo session to showcase live prototypes to guests and investors and get one on one feedback. As a result of the improved methodology, 7 teams graduated the Idea Accelerator 2.0 with live prototypes and great results.

Idea Accelerator 3.0 has 7 teams who will graduate on Jan 22 and will present their live products in expo and pitches sessions to panel of invited investors.

We welcome you to join our movement and create your next startup by HANDS ON workshops with Startup Monthly
